Dear Holy Ghost Parishioners,
To be a human being is to accept the status of temptation. We all find ourselves being pulled by visible and invisible forces to do what we do not intend to do. Thus, human life is a constant battle! Just a little bit of carelessness, laxity, weakness or overconfidence we will fall. Our mediocre and permissive ego causes us to make wrong choices. Only when we surpass egoistic tendencies, will we be our true self and reach for Truth, Goodness, Beauty.
In Lent the Holy Spirit leads us into wilderness to live with Jesus in solitude, in prayer, and fasting and to face our familiar temptations. It is a blessing to know that we are tempted. The temptations of Jesus are ours today.
1. The first temptation struck directly at our physical needs of nourishment. Both hunger and gluttony can paralyze and endanger our physical wellbeing. We learn from Jesus to overcome this first temptation by not succumbing to it as its top priority. We are still scratched by cravings, legitimate and unjustified, individual and collective. Nevertheless, discipline and moderation are the two virtues that assist us not to satisfy our cravings at all costs.
2. The second temptation is a rough and seductive temptation: worship the devil for power and glory. There are many people who have lightheartedly believed in this false promise. Many empires and dictators have drifted away in the course of history. Jesus did not want to submit himself to any authority other than that of the Father. The Father alone is the only One to whom we must worship and submit.
3. The third temptation is the temptation of doubting the providence of God’s love and mercy. When we find ourselves in a dangerous and threatening situation, we do not surrender to the Father’s merciful love and providential care. We want God to serve us. We are his masters and he is our Genie! (Aladine and Genie of the Lamp). Jumping off the roof of the Temple without dying is spectacular! Money, wealth, beauty, pleasure, degree, freedom, power, prestige, honor, race, science and technology are precious and enticing. However, if I exalt them to the rank of the Absolute and worship them as idols, then our life and our world will be like an upside-down pyramid. We will be crushed and destroyed!
Lord, help us to acknowledge that being tempted is our human condition and that we can only overcome temptation through your grace. In today's world, there are many enticing temptations that stir up the cravings in us. These are the temptation of appropriation and possession, the temptation to dominate with authority or knowledge, and the temptation to be self-indulgent and simply submit ourselves to all natural instincts locking ourselves in the prison cell of the narcissistic ego.

Queridos Feligreses de Holy Ghost: 

El ser un humano es aceptar la condición de tentación. Todos nos vemos arrastrados por fuerzas visibles e invisibles a hacer lo que no queremos hacer. Así, la vida humana es una batalla constante. Con un poco de descuido, debilidad o exceso de confianza caeremos. Nuestro ego nos hace tomar decisiones equivocadas. Sólo cuando superemos las tendencias egoístas, seremos realmente nosotros y buscaremos la Verdad, la Bondad y la Belleza.
En Cuaresma, el Espíritu Santo nos conduce al desierto para vivir con Jesús en soledad, en oración y ayuno y para enfrentar nuestras tentaciones familiares. Es una bendición saber que somos tentados. Las tentaciones de Jesús son las nuestras hoy.
1. La primera tentación atacó directamente nuestras necesidades físicas de alimentarnos. Tanto el hambre como la glotonería pueden paralizar y poner en peligro nuestro bienestar físico. Aprendemos de Jesús a superar esta primera tentación al no sucumbir a ella como su máxima prioridad. Aún sentimos los deseos legítimos e injustificados, individuales y colectivos. Sin embargo, la disciplina y la moderación son las dos virtudes que nos ayudan a resistirlas a toda costa.
2. La segunda tentación es una tentación áspera y seductora: adorar al diablo para
obtener poder y gloria. Hay mucha gente que ha creído a la ligera en esta falsa promesa. Muchos imperios y dictadores se han alejado a lo largo de la historia. Jesús no quiso someterse a ninguna otra autoridad que la del Padre. Sólo el Padre es el único al que debemos adorar y someternos.
3. La tercera tentación es la tentación de dudar de la providencia del amor y la
misericordia de Dios. Cuando nos encontramos en una situación peligrosa y amenazante, no nos rendimos al amor misericordioso y al cuidado providencial del Padre. Queremos que Dios nos sirva. Somos sus amos y él es nuestro genio (Aladine y el Genio de la Lámpara). ¡Saltar del tejado del Templo sin morir es espectacular! El dinero, la riqueza, la belleza, el placer, el título, la libertad, el poder, el prestigio, el honor, la raza, la ciencia y la tecnología son preciosos y atractivos. Sin embargo, si los exalto al rango de lo Absoluto y los adoro como ídolos, entonces nuestra vida y nuestro mundo serán como una pirámide invertida. ¡Seremos aplastados y destruidos!
Señor, ayúdanos a reconocer que ser tentados es nuestra condición humana y que solo podemos vencer la tentación mediante tu gracia. En el mundo de hoy, hay muchas tentaciones seductoras que despiertan los deseos en nosotros. Estas son la tentación de la apropiación y la posesión, la tentación de dominar con autoridad o conocimiento y la tentación de ser autoindulgentes y simplemente someternos a todos los instintos naturales, encerrándonos en la celda de la prisión del ego narcisista.
